$1.9 billion given online to US non-profits in 2003, says survey

Donors gave an estimated $1.9 billion online last year to non-profits in the USA, according to an online survey by The NonProfit Times and San Diego-based software service provider Kintera.

This figure represents an increase of over 60% on that raised online in 2002. The number of organisations seeking donations online also increased by 55%, comparing the first six months of 2002 to the same period in 2003.

The NonProfit Times e-mailed 30,000 non-profits and invited them to take part in an online survey at www.internetfundraisingsurvey.com. In total 787 responses were received, although Kintera whittled some out because they gave inconsistent figures and data.

The figures are estimates for several reasons. First the survey was not detailed, and focused on activities in 2002 and the first half of 2003. Secondly, a number of larger non-profits did not respond, and Kintera believes they are responsible for generating significant online income. Thirdly, Kintera chose to ignore a number of responses on the grounds that they appeared to be inconsistent or simply wrong when compared to other answers from the same respondent.
