Bike Week partners with Leukaemia Research for 2004
Bike Week, the UK’s annual celebration of cycling, has chosen the Leukaemia Research Fund as its national charity partner for 2004.
Bike Week involves over 1,500 cycling events taking place between 12-20 June 2004, many for novices, families and occasional cyclists. Bike Week event organisers are being encouraged to raise funds for the charity, which since 1989 has successfully used cycle rides to increase donations and raise awareness of its vital research work.
Many of Leukaemia Research’s popular Bikeathon events will now take place during Bike Week and become part of the nationwide campaign to get more people cycling more often. Bike Week is funded by the UK government, including Transport for London. Headline events include the Parliamentary Bike Ride for MPs and Lords and cycling festivals in major cities.

Participants in Bike2Work rides arranged by local authorities and other employers will be asked to donate the money they save by cycling to work during Bike Week to the charity, which previously benefited from the Blue Peter Bikeathon, a fundraising event promoted by the popular BBC TV children’s programme.
“Leukaemia Research is a natural partner for us,” explained Bike Week national co-ordinator Nick Harvey. “We wanted to link with a high-profile charity that understands how to turn the proven generosity of cyclists into effective medical research.”
Previous Bike Week national charity partners include Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation.
