Body Shop recycles mobile phones to raise funds for Refuge

Howard Lake | 16 January 2004 | News

The Body Shop has joined forces with mobile phone recycling company Greener Solutions to collect customers’ old or unwanted mobile phones and donate £2.75 for each one to Refuge, the charity dedicated to helping women and children affected by domestic violence.

Over three quarters of a million mobile phone handsets may have been dumped in a drawer or thrown in the bin since Christmas according to a new survey from the Body Shop. Just 4% of those questioned in the poll said they will be recycling their old phone. Over a quarter will either do nothing with their old phone or will simply throw it away.

The recycling campaign began on 5 January 2004. Unwanted handsets can be dropped off at any branch of the Body Shop.

Founder of The Body Shop, Dame Anita Roddick, said: “Three-quarters of a million unwanted phones equates to over £2 million that could be used to throw a lifeline to the victims of domestic violence and their families. We urge everyone who received a new mobile for Christmas to bring the old one into their nearest The Body Shop store and help our fight against violence in the home.”

The recycling campaign is part of The Help Stop Violence in the Home campaign which is running in over 300 stores of The Body Shop across the UK.
