Howard Lake | 21 September 2003 | News

Philanthropy UK has published a guide that explains how easy it is to give money, time and advice to good causes in a tax-efficient and effective way.

Philanthropy UK is a three-year project of the Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF) to encourage new philanthropy.

It has gathered all the latest information in one place both online and in printed form, and covers tax-efficient giving, gifts of shares, payroll giving, legacies, and investment in social businesses.

It shows how to make your donations go further thanks to recent tax rules which favour charitable causes.

The report’s author Theresa Lloyd said: “A Guide to Giving is the essential one-stop shop for anyone who is thinking about giving to good causes, and for anyone who already gives, but wants to be more effective. It will also prove invaluable for financial advisors, accountants and fundraisers, because all the information is in one place – and up to date.”

Lord Joel Joffe, chairman of the Giving Campaign, said: “This guide should prove invaluable to philanthropists and their advisers when examining the most effective way to give. In the long term, it will make an important contribution to strengthening the culture of giving by the wealthy in the UK.”

The Guide is available on the Web and in a printed ring-bound version, so that new information can be added as new tax regulations and allowances come into force and new financial products are launched.

The Guide also contains useful forms to establish a charitable trust, a jargon buster of technical terms, and a list of useful contact addresses and Web sites.

The guide has been published with funding form the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, the Gatsby Foundation, and the Lloyds-TSB Foundation for England and Wales.

The online version is available at no charge, or you can order the printed version for £10 from ACF.
