Oxford summer school to be named after Henry Drucker

Sutton Trust is to name one of its two Oxford summer schools after Dr Henry Drucker, widely recognised as one of the founding fathers of modern fundraising, who died in October 2002.

The Sutton Trust, the educational charity founded by Sir Peter Lampl in 1996 to help non-privileged students, will recognise Dr Drucker for his leadership as Director of Campaign for Oxford which raised £340m for Oxford University.

The Trust is to name one of its two Oxford summer schools after Dr Drucker who died last October. The summer school from July 13-19 is for for bright students from non-professional families and from schools and areas of the country which do not send many pupils to universities. It will be named the Sutton Trust Henry Drucker Summer School.

The summer school will aim to give students a genuine taste of life at the university with an intensive programme of study in their chosen subject similar to that undertaken by first year undergraduates. The 175 students will stay at one of the colleges for the week and be looked after by students of the university, some of whom will have attended a previous summer school.

Sir Peter Lampl, the Chairman of the Sutton Trust, explained: “Henry changed the face of fundraising in the UK by the success of Campaign for Oxford and by the assistance he gave to so many charities, universities, and arts organisations after he set up the consultancy, Oxford Philanthropic, in 1994. He is remembered at Edinburgh University where he taught Politics before coming to Oxford, as a tutor who gave huge encouragement to students with no family history of university education.

“Henry was also very enthusiastic about promoting social entrepreneurship and I gained enormously from his experience and enthusiasm. At the Sutton Trust we consider ourselves social entrepreneurs, which means we fund programmes that we think have wide applicability and try to persuade others to take them up. The summer schools are a prime example – the government has taken them up and virtually every university in the country now runs one.

“So I was enormously touched when Henry’s widow Nancy suggested that the proceeds from the Henry Drucker Memorial Fund now and in the future should be used to support Sutton Trust projects. The Oxford Summer School is the first of these projects.”
