New Media Age reports on the success of Barnardo’s 2001 E-baby viral marketing campaign.

The E-baby was an animated and interactive character that Barnardo’s launched in September 2001. The baby crawled across the PC screen and demanded some kind of response designed to test one’s parenting skills.

Users were encouraged to send the E-baby to a friend or make a donation. New Media Age this week reports that the E-baby was downloaded over 40,000 times in its first three months. In particular it proved popular with students and has helped Barnardo’s approach student sites to secure donated banner advertising.
