After raising £500,000 for health charities in 2002-03, the electrical retailor has chosen to support disability charities in 2003.

Dixons Group has launched Action4Disability, its new charity of the year campaign which has a disability theme. Over the next 18 months, the Group will support four disability charities: the Parkinson’s Disease Society, Action for Blind People, Headway – the brain injury association, and the Down’s Syndrome Association.

Action4Disability launches as the Group celebrates a successful end to its “Health Matters” charity of the year campaign, which raised nearly half a million pounds for a consortium of health charities including Breast Cancer Campaign, The Stroke Association, The Prostate Cancer Charity and the MS Society. The sum represents a 150% increase on charity fundraising achieved in the previous year, 2001.

Dixons Group Chairman, Sir John Collins, said: “In the European Year of Disabled People, I am delighted that our staff have voted to support these four charities. Each charity supports important services for people with disabilities and plays a vital role in research and education. Over the past 12 months, our staff have exceeded all our expectations with their of fundraising efforts for our Health Matters campaign, and I am confident that their support for Action4Disability will be equally strong over the next 18 months.”

He added: “Disability will be a real focus across the Dixons Group over the coming year. In addition to our Action4Disability charity campaign, we have applied for the government’s ‘two ticks’ symbol which is awarded to employers who are positive about disability. We will also be gearing up for the next phase of the Disability Discrimination Act in 2004, by reviewing store compliance and customer service across the business.”
