Christian Aid Week promoted with microsite

Christian Aid is using the Web to promote its key fundraising event, Christian Aid Week.

This year’s Christian Aid Week runs from 11 – 17 May 2003 and is being supported with a dedicated microsite at www.christianaidweek.org.uk. The site includes plenty of engaging activities including a writing competition, celebrity content, and an interactive “Herometer”. This will create “a morality map of Britain” through a “a quiz which places you in humorous moral dilemmas.” You can also find local activities throughout the UK.

Christian Aid has already been using the Web to generate support for Christian Aid Week amongst its supporters and church contacts. It’s christianaidconnect.org site has been carrying exclusive content and downloadable materials for the Week.

The microsite does of course include online donation facilities, including online credit/debit card and direct debits. One novel element of the site is that it lists the most recent online gift, including the donor’s name (or initials if they prefer) and the amount. In theory, apart from acknowledging a donor’s gift in public if they wish, this also serves to encourage potential donors by proving that other people are already giving online.

This is a very underused method of using giving data – only Comic Relief seems to have published anything similar in the form of its Galaxy of Stars. But even they didn’t list the latest donation in real time. Perhaps other charities will follow this good example.

The Christian Aid Week microsite has been designed by Kleber, the new media agency whose clients have included Warp Records, MTV Europe, Kylie Minogue, The Beatles, and Ninja Tune.

New Media Age last week judged the new site as “Site of the Week” giving it 86/100. Reviewer Sara Davies said “all in all, a truly complementary offering to the main Christian Aid site.”
