Charities Bill Coalition asks PM for support

Howard Lake | 2 April 2003 | News

The Charities Bill Coalition has written to the Prime Minister and his Cabinet Ministers encouraging them to support the reform of charity law and
urging them to press their colleagues in the Home Office to commit to a charities Bill in this year’s Queen’s speech.

Tony Blair and 19 different Cabinet Ministers received the letter signed by the 24 members of the Charities Bill Coalition this week. It draws their attention to the recommendation by the Cabinet’s own Strategy Unit that charitable status in law should be based on the principle of public benefit.

It also welcomed the Home Secretary’s recognition that it is essential, in the interest of preserving public trust and confidence in charities, that a new Charities Bill is drafted.
