Guide Dogs registers cheeseandwine.org.uk for fundraising events

It's not just charities' names and initials that need registering as domain names to protect: their brands, trademarks and even fundraising event names should be considered for protection by registering the appropriate domain names.

In 2003 Guide Dogs for the Blind will be encouraging supporters to host cheese and wine events to raise funds for the charity. It expects that more than 500 of these events will take place throughout the UK, and hopes they will raise at least £50,000. As part of the promotion and support for this initiative the charity has registered the domain name cheeseandwine.org.uk. In fact, it registered the domain name back on 10 April 2001. The charity has not set up a separate site for the domain name, but simply points it at the relevant fundraising page on its main Web site.

Registering such domain names is important, but so too is managing them and retaining them. Has your charity audited the domain names it holds, or asked its staff, volunteers and supporters if they have registered any related domain names in their own name? Do you have a list of when each domain name comes up for renewal?

Now would be a good time to check your domain name assets, both the usual and unusual ones.
