National Autistic Society campaign targets GPs

Howard Lake | 24 October 2002 | News

The National Autistic Society (NAS) is running a direct mail campaign to 34,000 GP practices in the UK at the end of October with sponsorship from Barclays.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of autistic spectrum disorders amongst doctors and promote the NAS Autism Helpline to parents.

The mailing pack contains helpful information for GPs including a reference leaflet ‘Recognising Autistic Spectrum Disorders’ and a fact sheet ‘A GP’s guide to adults with Asperger Syndrome’. GPs will receive posters highlighting some of the characteristics of autism, and handout cards giving details of the Autism Helpline, to be displayed in surgeries or health centres.

The NAS is also including a questionnaire asking GPs about their experiences of the assessment, referral, diagnosis and support of patients with autistic spectrum disorders. This survey will enable the NAS to understand the availability of resources for GPs to support such patients and the results

will be published during 2003. GPs will have the option of responding online & will receive a free email copy of the NIASA report if they take part.

The mailing is supported by Barclays.
