Phasing appeals into stages to motivate committees

Howard Lake | 9 September 2002 | News

Ian Kerr of Midas Charity Appeals shares a tip to motivate appeal committees.

Ian writes: “When my friend, Robert Vincent, uses his favourite expression ‘Bang on about’ I pay attention. He is an extremely skilled appeal chairman with those scarce talents in fundraising of being able both to motivate and to ask.

Recently his ‘banging on’ was about phasing an appeal not just into achievable lumps, but into carefully planned periods that motivate him and his committee. Often an appeal whether revenue or capital can be phased naturally. At other times it is necessary to do some creative figuring, adding or subtracting to the target sums so that as a result there is always something to work towards and a celebration to plan or enjoy.

So phasing is a key tool for all fundraisers – it leads not just into celebrations, but also acknowledgements and re-activating prospects who have not yet donated etc.

Robert Vincent will be presenting how both to motivate and plan an appeal committee on October 15th at a Workshop Funding Capital Appeals.”
