The Charity Commission has published the latest totals of charities in England and Wales. At the end of 2001 there were 188,116 charities on their Register, of whom 27,338 were subsidiaries or branches. This means that there were 160,778 main charities.

Total annual income of all these registered main charities was £26,708,648,232, according to the Register. These figures confirm that very few charities raise a large proportion of total charitable income: 372 charities, 0.24% of those on the Register, raise over £10m per year, but together they receive 42.75% of the total annual income of all charities on the Register.
