The Shropshire Star reports that a Shrewsbury woman who won the top cash prize of £3,500 in a national raffle also collected the £2,000 bonus prize for selling the winning ticket. This should not come as a great surprise since many charity raffle ticket buyers buy the book of raffle tickets themselves rather than sell them to friends and colleagues.
If the bonus prize offer did succeed in boosting ticket sales then it worked well for the charity. However, such an “incentive” could also serve to encourage people not to sell more tickets. In effect, by buying the tickets yourself you’re taking a free extra punt on winning twice.
