A survey by international development charity VSO has found that the UK public has an out-of-date understanding of international development work. It reveals that people are still influenced by the images of Live Aid in 1984-5: nearly three-quarters believe that developing countries “depend on the money and knowledge of the West to progress”.
If this is true, then fundraisers at development charities might well have succeeded in generating the funds, but failed at communicating the changing needs and conditions of their partner communities.
