How can Internet users ascertain the credibility of an organisation publishing online? For charities, as much as for for-profit companies, this is a key issue. But can it be measured? The US Consumers Union thinks so and has launched the Web Credibility Project to try to persuade Web site owners to disclose business links, especially where there is a conflict of interest.
Transparency should be a key element of charities’ activities. Although it is unlikely that credibility can be measured and rated online, charities should nevertheless be working to demonstrate their credibility and openness both offline and online.
