The government is to review charity law in England and Wales. The Whitehall performance and innovation unit (PIU) will conduct a six-month review of the legal and regulatory framework. Prime Minister Tony Blair said: “The Government is committed to working in partnership with charities and the voluntary sector to strengthen their contribution to the health and dynamism of the society and the economy. The project will consider how the regulatory and legal framework could better enable existing organisations to thrive and grow; encourage the development of new types of organisations where needed, and ensure public confidence.”

Such a review has long been anticipated, and has been welcomed by both the National Council for Voluntary Organisations and the Directory of Social Change.
