Euro introduction offers fundraising opportunity
The introduction of the Euro in Ireland on 9 February 2002 offers an once-in-a-lifetime fundraising opportunity. The Pennies from Heaven campaign hopes to persuade people to donate their current Irish coinage to charity before it ceases to become legal tender. The money will then be donated to charity.

The central bank estimates that there is around £30m in coinage stashed at homes across the country. The campaign will start five months before the introduction of the Euro.
