US non-profits get national dialling code

Howard Lake | 23 August 2000 | News

Dial 911 in the USA and you get through to the emergency services, the equivalent of dialling 999 in the UK. Following a unanimous vote by the Federal Communications Commission last month, non-profits now have their own designated national dialling code. Any number with the prefix 211 will put you in touch with a community service organisation. The prefix is designed to give greater prominence to non-profit helplines and other services. The United Ways of Connecticut and Atlanta have already seen a 40% increase in telephone enquiries following its introduction.

There is no UK equivalent code to designate a non-profit service.
