£20 million grant from Garfield Weston Foundation

Garry Weston, the sixth richest man in Britain according to The Sunday Times Wealth List, has donated a record £20 million to the British Museum. The gift will allow it to complete the Great Court, Sir Norman Foster’s plan to integrate the central courtyard of the Museum with the Reading Room. The money was donated via Mr Weston’s Garfield Weston Foundation.

The money was donated via Mr Weston’s Garfield Weston Foundation.

The gift is the largest that the Museum has ever received from a private donor, and The Times reports that it is the third largest ever given to a UK museum or gallery.

Mr Weston’s estimated $1.5 billion worth is derived from his lifelong family involvement with Associated British Foods, which was founded by his grandfather. He is also chairman of Fortnum & Mason.
