The voluntary sector constitutes an ever-growing proportion of the workforce of many countries. In the USA, 7.8% of the workforce is employed by non-profit organisations. In Europe the proportions are even higher. Ten and a half per cent of the Belgian workforce work for non-profits, in Ireland the figure is 11.5%, and in the Netherlands 12.4% of the workforce work for a non-profit.
