'Plenty for Twenty' fundraising campaign helps local hospice to celebrate its 20th anniversary

A summer fundraising campaign to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Peterborough’s Sue Ryder – Thorpe Hall Hospice has been so successful that it has been extended to the end of the year having already raised £8000 to date!
Sue Ryder services are funded through a combination of statutory funding, personal funding and voluntary donations. The hospice costs £2m a year to run and more than £1m of this has to come from voluntary donations. The hospice needs to fundraise for its ongoing daily running costs. Area Fundraising Manager, Becky Hooper explains:
“Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice has been serving the community of Peterborough for over twenty years. All the funds we raise help the hospice expand its services to reach more people when they need it most. The hospice provides end of life and long-term care services through its in-patient unit and day hospice, but also offers a range of services that help improve the quality of life for its patients such as complimentary therapies or bereavement services to support patients’ family and friends. We rely heavily on the support of the community to help us raise the monies required to continue providing high quality care for people at a very difficult time of their life.
“Plenty for Twenty” encourages supporters to organise fundraising events in honour of our special birthday and Community Fundraiser, Mikey Clarke, kicked started the campaign himself with a 20 hour treadmill session, which raised more than £500 and other Thorpe Hall colleagues raised over £150 from a sponsored slim. Supporter events have included a 20k walk by Stamford-based company Trinity Conferences and a concert at which the Ukulele Orchestra of Spalding played 20 songs but one fundraiser, June Philips, had a very personal reason for getting involved.
June Phillips, whose mother was cared for in the first year the hospice opened, joined in by selling home-made cakes to her neighbours at St Mary’s Court flats.
June explained: “I was only too happy to do my part for this campaign. The care my mother was given 20 years ago was first class. It’s good to hear that the same lever of care is given today. “
June continued ‘My mother was very much into her country music, so staff at Thorpe Hall Hospice arranged for a country singer to perform at the Hospice. I always read about similar stories like this in the paper. By taking part in “Plenty for Twenty” we can ensure this kind of thing continues for many more years”.

We are also looking for people who would like to send us an anniversary message to be included in our memory book and general promotions. There are several other ways in which people can support the hospice including taking part in one of our many events such as our annual Lights of Love campaign in December that encourages people to come together to celebrate the life of a loved one or our annual events such as the Midnight Walk, Jailbreak or Ride for Ryder.
If you’re a keen runner you could take part in a marathon or half marathon for us such as the Virgin London marathon or one of our challenge events including our exciting Sahara Trek, Hadrian’s Wall, Jurassic Coast or Great Wall of China trek in 2012. Alternatively, for those interested in more traditional options, you can set up a regular direct debit or consider leaving a gift in your will.
A donation of just £15 would pay for an hour of care at the hospice; £120 would cover the cost of a nurse’s shift for a whole day and a donation of £1000 would help purchase a new syringe driver which helps patients to keep pain under control.”
