Charities in Ireland will benefit from a car insurance rebate linked to the coronavirus crisis.

Liberty Insurance is offering to give its customers a rebate because of the deduction in claims as drivers stay off the roads because of the coronavirus lockdown. The customer rebates will amount to around €5 million.

Each customer will receive 15% of their existing premium for two months, provided this reaches a minimum amount of €10. However, for practical reasons customers will have to request rebates, beginning on June 8 via the insurer’s website.

Customers can either claim the refund through a “cash equivalent voucher” or they can ask the company to donate it on their behalf to a charity assisting with the frontline response to Covid-19. If the money is not collected during the timeframe, each customer’s entitlement will be given to charity.

Liberty is estimated to have a roughly 10 per cent market share in Ireland, equating to 200,000 motor policies. On that basis customers would receive a €25 rebate.

Meanwhile, the charity umbrella organisation The Wheel said its most survey of its membership reveals that between 70%-90% of its 1850 members have had to cancel fundraising events.

Deirdre Garvey, CEO of The Wheel, said in some cases that represents between 20% and 100% of an organisations funding and that it would have a serious impact on their ability to deliver services.

Ms Garvey called for urgent support to help charities with their cashflow.
