Mary’s Meals is named Welsh Assembly staff charity

Howard Lake | 3 August 2009 | News

Mary’s Meals, which runs school feeding programmes for children in some of the world’s poorest places, has been selected to be the Welsh Assembly Government’s overseas staff charity for the coming year.

The charity provides children with a daily meal in school for an average of £8.40 a year and operates in 15 countries.

The announcement follows a vote by the 6,000 employees at the Welsh Assembly and means that Mary’s Meals will be one of two nominated charities that staff can contribute to direct from their salaries through payroll giving.

Every employee, from civil servants to security staff, Assembly Members and party leaders can make a contribution if they choose to. Staff will also be invited to take part in fundraising events during the year.

Mary’s Meals was praised in December 2008 by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, writing in The Telegraph: “Mary’s Meals is a shining example of a charity encouraging education in the poorest countries by providing food within the school.”

Mary’s Meals is administered by Scottish International Relief.
