Free charity guide to tax-effective giving

Howard Lake | 13 June 2006 | Newswire

The Institute of Fundraising (‘Institute’) has launched the definitive guide for charities to tax-effective giving; Making Giving Go Further. The new free guide forms part of the Institute’s wider tax-effective giving project and campaign to encourage and support small and medium charities in making better use of tax-effective giving.
The new guide explains the main tax-effective giving mechanisms available to charities and how they can be applied, including Gift Aid, Share Giving and leaving money to charity in a will.
Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive at the Institute of Fundraising, says: “Since the launch of the Getting Britain Giving package of tax incentives in 1999, we have seen UK fundraising go from strength to strength. More and more charities are making use of the generous tax relief system available to us, but there is much greater potential yet to be achieved. Making Giving Go Further is a comprehensive guide which sets out all charities need to know to increase their income through tax-effective giving initiatives.”
Like many large voluntary organisations, Action Water is one example of a smaller charity that has experienced success in using Gift Aid – a topic covered in the new guide. Neil Battersby, spokesperson for Action Water, says: “To tell the truth, I have surprised myself by totting up the total amount of Gift Aid we have generated over the past six years. Up until April 2006 we have claimed a total of £26,162! What have we done with the money? We have refurbished and shipped 2 water tanker trucks to Africa and drilled 50 bore wells in India.”
The booklet is part of the Institute’s wider tax-effective giving programme offering support services to charities across England, funded by the Active Communities Directorate.
