Pharoah sets up own research consultancy
Cathy Pharoah, CAF’s head of research for 11 years, has left to set up her own research consultancy.
The new company – Third Sector Prospect – will work in all areas of the sector including philanthropy, giving and the sector’s resources, but Pharoah said she will be broadening out the agenda in response to other research needs within the sector.
Although she will be mainly working solo, she said she planned to work with others where appropriate and pull teams together to develop and carry out new research projects.

She said there is still a lot of scope for research on giving as so little is known about it. Research has gone into measuring giving, but we still know very little about why people give and the impact of different fundraising techniques, as well as the difference between major philanthropy and small-scale giving, she said.
Pharoah’s colleague at CAF Catherine Walker has also left the organisation. With Adrian Sargeant moving from Bristol Business School to the US this month, this potentially leaves a medium-term gap in research terms for the fundraising sector.
