London Travelcard survey to raise funds for four charities

Howard Lake | 6 November 2014 | News

Transport for London and National Rail are conducting a survey into Travelcard use in and around London and will be making donations to charity for each response completed.
Travelcard journey diaries are being handed out on the transport network and sent through the post to help the companies understand better how Travelcards are used.
A £2 donation will be made by the companies for every diary returned with completed details of the user’s journeys. The donations will be split equally between Asthma UK, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Royal National Institute of Blind People, and Macmillan Cancer Support.
The survey has been carried out for the past eight years. So far it has raised over £415,000 for charity. The latest donation of £8,300 was handed over in August 2014.

How are the charities chosen?

Transport for London chooses four charities each July to benefit from the Travelcard survey donation. They are designed “to appeal to the public’s range of preferences”. As a result, the charities usually include “two health charities, one animal charity and one miscellaneous charity”.
Selected charities will benefit from one year, but may also remain a beneficiary for a maximum of one additional year.
Previous beneficiaries have included RNLI, Action on Hearing Loss, Scope and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. The charities do not necessarily have to have a London focus.
Transport for London says that it does “welcome expressions of interest from both local and national charities.” It gives the contact number of 020 7656 5494.
