CAFAmerica launches new 'Friends Of' service

CAFAmerica has created a new ‘Friends Of’ service, designed to make it easier to attract support and raise funds from donors in America.

To date, charities wanting to run a ‘Friends Of’ organisation and collect tax-deductible contributions from donors in America have had to create a new legal identity in the U.S., typically a nonprofit organisation. The time and costs involved in this process has meant that many UK charities have not followed through with this option.

To overcome this, CAFAmerica’s new ‘Friends Of’ Charity Fund now makes it possible for UK charities to create a new legal entity within CAFAmerica itself. The administration of the service is handled by CAFAmerica, “creating a level playing field for small and large charities alike”.

Susan Saxon-Harrold, Chief Executive of CAFAmerica, said: “We developed this new service on the strength of feedback we’d got from UK charities that had tried to operate their own ‘Friends Of’ service in the USA. Set-up costs were often cited as the biggest hurdle. But some charities also found that the schemes were time consuming and many were unsure how to use them to their best advantage.”

To use the new service UK charities need to be registered with CAFAmerica. Once registered charities can simply request a ‘Friends of’ Charity Fund Starter Pack.
