Howard Lake | 17 January 2006 | News

As 2005 ended Concern Chief Executive Tom Arnold has expressed his gratitude to the Irish public for their generosity in a year which has seen some of the worst humanitarian disasters of modern times. The response in Ireland to Concern appeals will total nearly €60 million.

Beginning with the tsunami in South East Asia, followed by a food crisis in Sub Saharan Africa and then a devastating earthquake in Pakistan the world has been confronted with one humanitarian crisis after another.

I would like to thank all Concern supporters for their remarkable generosity during 2005 which was a year of unprecedented challenge for the organization with the number of disasters which occurred, said Mr Arnold.

By the end of November fundraising from the Irish public had exceeded all forecasts. Due to the incredible public response to Concern appeals a figure in the region of €57.5 million is expected to have been raised by the end of 2005.

In the aftermath of the devastating tsunami in South East Asia the Irish public gave Concern well over €6 million, before Ireland’s leading aid agency stopped accepting donations.

With government contributions on top of the money raised from the public Concern have been able to spend nearly €13 million in the tsunami affected areas and still have that amount left for the vast amount of work that still needs to be done over the coming years.

Concern raised €6.2 million for the food crisis in Sub Saharan Africa in August and September while over €5 million was donated for the earthquake in Pakistan.
