“Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, the fundraising single of 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, is to be re-recorded soon and released for the third time to raise funds for famine relief work in Sudan.

“Do They Know It’s Christmas?” is the best-selling single in the UK, and inspired the 1985 Live Aid fundraising concerts. The single was re-recorded in 1989 by new stars like Kylie Minogue and Wet Wet Wet.

The Sun reports that it will be rerecorded again by today’s stars, including, reportedly , Coldplay, The Darkness, Robbie Williams, Travis and Dido. It will be released before Christmas 2004 and no doubt will stand a good chance of becoming the Christmas number one.

The re-recording has both Bob Geldof and Midge Ure’s backing. Ure said: “Dominic Mohan (The Sun) approached Bob and I about re-recording the single and we thought it was a great idea. So far we’ve had the backing of Chris Martin (Coldplay) Fran (Travis) , the Darkness and Keane. Nigel Godridge (Coldplay) will produce and I’ll exec produce. So we’re looking forward to a Xmas No. 1!”

Proceeds will again benefit the Band Aid Trust.
