The Economist suggests new golden age of philanthropy

Howard Lake | 19 August 2004 | News

The Economist magazine suggests that we could be entering a new golden age of philanthropy, with the emergence of “a new kind of donor is emerging, with a new approach to giving.”

Quoting the latest statistics on charitable giving in Giving USA, The Economist suggests that philanthropy is once again taking off both in North America and Europe. Claiming that “Bill Gates of Microsoft and Pierre Omidyar of eBay are today’s [Andrew] Carnegies”, the magazine argues that these super-wealthy people, together with a population that is both ageing and comparatively well off, are combining with tax-efficient giving opportunities to offer an unprecedented level of giving to charities.

The article includes coverage of the latest research into philanthropy.
