Sunday Times publishes guide to the richest 1000
The Sunday Times today publishes its “definitive guide to the richest 1,000 in Britain and Ireland”, a standard reference publication for many fundraising researchers. The 102-page guide is published free with the newspaper.
The 15th annual survey of Britain’s rich has been compiled by Philip Beresford and Stephen Boyd. As well as biographical details of the richest 1,000, the publication includes analysis of the data by geography, profession, company and other criteria.
Fundraising researchers will find much of it of interest, in particular the tables listing the top 20 political donors and the thirty generous givers to charity. This is the first time that the guide has listed charitable giving. The table of charitable donors was produced from responses to a questionnaire sent out by the Sunday Times and The Giving Campaign to all the members of the previous year’s Rich List asking them about their charitable contributions.
It takes into account personal donations, donations to or from personal charitable foundations or trusts, and donations from companies in which individuals hold a controlling interest. The table is ranked according to a giving index, which is calculated as the percentage of their personal wealth that each member donated to charity last year.

Speaking about the table, Amanda Delew, Director of The Giving Campaign said: “We are delighted that the Sunday Times has shown its commitment to charitable giving by including the table. We want people’s generosity to be celebrated and hopefully inspire others, particularly the wealthy, to give more to good causes. The Rich List provides the ideal high profile platform for doing so.”
