Mathematical prizes still on offer
Russian mathematician Grigory Perelman has turned down a $1 million prize for solving the Poincare conjecture, a remarkably difficult maths problem. Apart from this prize, there are still a few other major maths prizes awaiting claims. So, if your funding bids aren’t working too well this year, find a friendly maths genius and see if you can persuade them to crack some of the following problems and then donate the prize to your charity.
- Poincare conjecture – it’s not yet confirmed that Grigory Perelman has solved it correctly. It’s worth $1 million.
- Collatz problem – £1,000
- Riemann hypothesis – $1 million
These and some other non-monetary-prize maths prizes are detailed in today’s Guardian.
