Virgin Money Giving reveals North East saw biggest rise in donations in 2016
Charitable donations rose by almost 18% in the North East of England last year, the highest in the UK according to figures from Virgin Money Giving.
Donation growth rose 8% in East Anglia, almost 4% in the North West and South East, and 3% in the East Midlands. The figures also show the average donation across the UK to be just over £33.
Virgin Money Giving questioned 2,000 adults about their giving in 2016, including whether the vote to leave the European Union affected their giving in the second half of the year. It found that while 4% had planned to give more to charity, 8% actually did so, and while 75% said they planned to give the same to charity, a smaller percentage – 63% – did so. In addition, while 5% said they planned to give less to charity, 7% carried this out.
Jo Barnett, executive director at Virgin Money Giving, said:
“Our analysis shows that despite real income falling and economic uncertainty, Brits are still remarkably generous when it comes to charitable giving. It’s clear that individual motivation for charitable giving goes well beyond the constraints of personal finances.”
Last year, Virgin Money Giving helped charities raise almost £92 million, and has so far helped to raise more than half a billion pounds since its 2009 launch.
