2,000 charities to benefit from donation of 6.5 million nappies

Howard Lake | 30 July 2013 | News

Health and hygiene manufacturer Kimberly-Clark is donating 6.5 million nappies to disadvantaged families and infants in the UK and Europe. They will be distributed via up to 2,000 charities by In Kind Direct, one of The Prince's Charities.

The donation is equivalent to two nappies for every child aged under four in the UK. They will be distributed to community nurseries, disability charities, family welfare groups, hospices, refugee-support groups and other child and family charities. They will be used in the charities' operations or to give out for free to the people they support.

End of line production

The donation is being made because Kimberly-Clark has recently ended its production of Huggies® nappies across most of Europe. It is focusing instead on "its stronger markets and brands" such as Andrex®, Kleenex®, and Huggies Pull-Ups®. It therefore decided to donate a large amount of residual stock.

Kimberly-Clark has been donating stock regularly to In Kind Direct since 1998. Since then, the company has donated £4.5 million in value of nappies, bath tissue and other products benefiting over 3,000 charities across the UK.

James Williams, Deputy Chief Executive, In Kind Direct said: "Our distribution model means that we can get stock to thousands of grassroots charities working at the front line to help those in real need. Currently many families are struggling to make ends meet and affording the basics can be a real challenge. This donation from Kimberly-Clark will be hugely welcomed by charities supporting some of our most disadvantaged communities”.

How to acquire donated nappies

The nappies will be distributed to charities registered with In Kind Direct.
