EuroMillions winners create charitable trust with £5m endowment

Howard Lake | 5 February 2013 | News

Chris and Colin Weir, who won £161 million in the EuroMillions lottery in July 2011, have created a new grantmaking trust.

The Weir Charitable Trust has been endowed with £5 million and will fund health, sport, cultural, recreational and animal welfare projects in Scotland.

Applications are accepted from individuals, voluntary groups and charities. There is no minimum sum to apply for, but all applicants must be based in Scotland and the projects funded must be located in Scotland.

The first deadline for applications is 7 March 2013. The subsequent dates are 31 May, 30 August and 15 November 2013.

Chris and Colin Weir said: "we have been looking at finding a more structured way to share our good fortune on an ongoing basis across Scotland. It has taken some time to set up, but we are pleased that the Trust will now allow us to do that at a time when good causes in Scotland are struggling.”

Previous charitable gifts

The couple from Largs in Ayrshire have already made gifts with some of their money. They donated £1 million to the Scottish National Party's campaign for independence, and helped fund surgery in the USA for a four year old girl with cerebral palsy.
