Survey reports drop in Irish charity income

Howard Lake | 20 December 2012 | News

A new survey by the Irish Times has revealed that two thirds of charities have seen their incomes fall in recent years.

The survey, which is based on 32 charities, showed that a third of charities had a fall in income of over 15%. The survey did not distinguish between income from the state, which accounts for nearly two thirds of charity income, and fundraising income from individuals and other sources.

The survey is in line with a much larger survey undertaken by charity umbrella group the Wheel earlier in the year which showed that 57% of charities had seen their income drop.

The fundraising picture for Irish charities in the last few years has not been consistent, with some showing a drop in income while others, such as the Irish Cancer Society, reporting a growth in income. Other charities have only been able to maintain fundraising levels with increased investment in fundraising staff and direct marketing.

The Irish Times survey also found that just 30% of charities had seen staff numbers increase or remain the same while the Wheel’s survey found that staff numbers had increased in 70% of the 500 charities it surveyed.
