Visitor giving conference to be held next month

Howard Lake | 27 September 2012 | News

A two-day conference next month will focus on how to develop and increase visitor giving at nature tourism venues. The Visitor Giving conference will take place on 17 and 18 October in Windermere in The Lake District, and is being run by visitor giving specialists Nurture Lakeland, based in Cumbria.

Speakers include Harold Goodwin (International Centre for Responsible Tourism), Richard Hammond (Chief Executive and Founder, Greentraveller Limited) and Sue Savege (Director, Nurture Lakeland).

Masterclasses will be run by experts including Changing Horizon, who will concentrate on visitor giving technology, mobile apps and text giving, and Bev Cavender of WildFell Training Ltd, who will offer insights into how best to engage tourism businesses and encourage them to establish visitor giving schemes.

Visitor giving is also sometimes referred to as visitor payback or visitor gifting.

The event will be attended by delegates from organisations that work in protected landscapes, as well as Areas of Outstanding National Beauty, National Parks and other tourism destinations.

Nurture Lakeland is a charity, which offers advice and support on visitor giving to other organisations through its trading arm, Nurture Tourism. It claims to have set up the UK’s first visitor giving scheme in the mid-1990s. Since then it has specialised in helping other organisations learn how to “make lots of small donations add up to sizeable sums that can provide valuable funds for conservation work and sustainable tourism projects is second-to-none”.

The day one, non-residential day rate for the Visitor Giving Conference costs £133 + VAT and the full conference non-residential cost is £171 + VAT.
