Record amounts of Gift Aid claimed
HMRC reports that record amounts of Gift Aid were claimed by charities in 2009-2010. With claims of £1.007m, this was the first time that charities have claimed more than £1 billion in Gift Aid. The figure is, however, provisional at this stage.
In 2008-09 the figure was £946,000, and in 2007-08 it was £898,000.
John Low, Charities Aid Foundation Chief Executive welcomed the announcement, saying: “It is great to see record amounts of Gift Aid claimed in a year when our research shows that overall giving has fallen, but this is no reason for complacency – we know that many hundreds of millions of potential Gift Aid still remains to be harnessed for the work of charities.
“With the support of the new Government, perhaps it will now be possible to drive through a radical simplification of Gift Aid processing to maximise the tax recovered on charitable donations.”
