Charity Commission updates its fundraising guidance

The , the independent regulator of charities in England and Wales, has published updated ./guidance on fundraising for charities. The document ‘Charities and Fundraising’ (CC20), available online, is designed to help charities carry out fundraising activities that comply with both legal requirements and best practice.

It details where specific legal requirements apply on how to fundraise. Updates to the guide include more detail on risk management of fundraising and advice for trustees on what to consider when choosing fundraising methods.

It also clarifies how the self-regulation of fundraising and Codes of Fundraising Practice sit alongside the Commission’s regulation of charity law. It was drawn up with input from the self-regulatory fundraising bodies as well as other organisations, regulators and government departments.

Rosie Chapman, Executive Director for Policy and Effectiveness at the Charity Commission, pointed out the value of the guide to trustees. She said: “In order to ensure continued donations and public trust and confidence in their work, it is important that trustees are aware of both their legal responsibilities and good practice when carrying out fundraising activities. ‘Charities and Fundraising’ sets out the key issues that trustees should address in order to fundraise effectively, efficiently and legally.”
