Dormant Accounts funding set to decline

The amount of funding from the Dormant Accounts Fund in Ireland, which has made grants of nearly €100 million since its formation, is set to decline, according to the government department which overseas the distribution of funds to charities and voluntary organisations.
The Department of Community and Rural Affairs said it expects €12.95 million to be available from dormant accounts in 2009. Disbursements from the Dormant Accounts Fund target three broad categories of persons:
•those affected by economic and social disadvantage;

•those affected by educational disadvantage and
•persons with a disability.
The decline it said to be down to fewer dormant accounts becoming available as people become more diligent about claiming money in the current recession.
Recently the Government approved an allocation of over €3 million from the Dormant Accounts Fund to support homelessness (€1.5 million) and substance misuse projects (€1.56m).
