Arts Council England to give £44.5m to sustain arts through recession

Howard Lake | 7 May 2009 | News

Arts Council England is to invest an extra £44.5 million in artists and arts organisations over the next two years to help them through the recession.

The funding is split into three strands. ‘Sustain’ is a new £40 million open application fund for arts organisations suffering as a result of the recession: applications should be turned round within six weeks. The Arts Council will make £500,000 available for the Town Centres Initiative to enable more artistic activities to take place in empty retail spaces. There will also be a £4 million increase in the Grants for the arts budget over the next two years.

The new funding has been made available by the Arts Council “radically reducing” its Lottery cash balances over the next two years.
