Giles Pegram to leave NSPCC next year

Giles Pegram, Director of Fundraising at NSPCC, is to retire in April 2010, so the children’s charity has begun searching for a successor.
Giles Pegram took the post in 1979 and has steered the NSPCC’s fundraising from £3 million per year then to almost 50 times that now. The charity has described the opportunity as significant: “one of the biggest jobs in charity fundraising is advertised this week, for the first time in 30 years”.
Pegram has overseen the £15 million Centenary Appeal in 1984 and the Full Stop Appeal which raised more than £250 million between 1999 and 2007.
When he retires in a year’s time he will take up consultancy work.
Andrew Flanagan, chief executive of the NSPCC, described Pegram as “an exceptional and influential fundraiser” and thanked him for his work.
He added: “Our spending on services for children has never been higher and, to continue this vital work, we are seeking someone with an outstanding track record of inspiring and motivating others to lead a team of almost 400 talented and committed fundraisers”.
Pegram said he had always planned to retire at 60, adding: “The post of director of fundraising at the NSPCC is one of the most challenging and most rewarding in the fundraising world, and it’s one that I have thoroughly enjoyed. My successor will be privileged – as I have been – to work for such an inspirational organisation, and to lead a team of such dedicated and talented fundraisers”.
The search for a successor will be managed by Odgers Ray and Berndtston.
Pegram began fundraising at school when he set up an Oxfam group. Before the NSPCC he worked for Oxfam and Help the Aged. He was nominated UK Professional Fundraiser of the Year in 1994, and received the Institute of Fundraising/Professional Fundraising Awards ‘Lifetime Achievement in Fundraising’ award in 2002.
