Sailors’ Society Woolly Hat week turned on its head!

Howard Lake | 28 January 2009 | News

International seafaring charity, Sailors’ Society, has announced its popular Woolly Hat Week returns from the 6-13 February this year, with a slightly different twist.
Organisers are hoping that companies will encourage their staff to take part in “Wear your Woolly Hat to Work Week” and send in a small donation. The money raised will help the Sailors’ Society provide assistance to seafarers in ports across the world, as well as going towards the transportation and distribution of woolly hats to seafarers ill-prepared for colder climates.
Director of Fundraising and Marketing at the Sailors’ Society, Jan Webber, explained: “We are extremely grateful to our committed band of knitters who continue to supply us with woolly hats throughout the year. We are now asking for involvement from others who perhaps cannot knit but still wish to support us.’ By wearing your woolly hat to work, and being sponsored for wearing it in the office or workplace, we hope to raise awareness of the plight of seafarers and assist them with the help they require. The money raised will help with the distribution of woolly hats to our Chaplains throughout the world. We are currently preparing for a trip to the Ukraine where 10,000 hats will be provided to seafarers visiting the eight ports serviced by the Sailors’ Society.”
It is hoped the campaign will capture the imagination of large and small companies alike, particularly those in Southampton, home of the Sailors’ Society, as well as shipping and marine companies and other businesses in ports across the UK.
Jan Webber added: “Companies who take part in Woolly Hat Week will find it’s a good way of boosting morale at the same time as raising money for a good cause. We suggest that companies could even provide prizes for the most colourful or outrageous woolly hats!”

Notes to Editors:

The Sailors’ Society is an inter-denominational charity which replaces isolation with belonging amongst seafarers throughout the world. Through a network of Port Chaplains and Seafarers’ Centres, operating in 30 countries in almost 100 Ports, the Society aims to enhance and enrich the lives of the 1.2million seafarers who often lead dangerous and lonely lives at sea, many miles from home. The Port Chaplains visit thousands of ships every year, directly addressing the needs of seafarers – irrespective of a person’s belief or nationality.
A reassuring presence for both current and retired seafarers and their families, the Society offers practical help, which can be as little as the resource to contact loved ones after months away, to spiritual assistance and counselling in times of need. Port Chaplains focus on improving the quality of seafarers’ lives, as well as maintaining vital links within the Ports that they operate.
