BBC audiences donated £113 million in 2007/08

BBC audiences donated £113 million to charitable causes during in the year 2007/08. On average BBC appeals raise £70 million each year.
Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day 2007 raised £67,700,000; Children in Need 2007 £37,500,000; local radio appeals £1,836,132; BBC Wildlife Fund £1,776,619; Blue Peter/Barnardo’s Disc Drive Appeal £675,000; BBC Performing Arts Fund £2,700,000; Lifeline £129,500; and Northern Ireland appeals £2,745.
Radio 4 Appeals raised £701,200, including £33,500 from Christopher Biggins’ appeal on behalf of the WRVS, and Radio 4’s Christmas Appeal raised £725,000.
Mark Thompson, Director-General of the BBC, said: “These figures are enormously impressive, and a testament to the unique relationship between the BBC and its audiences – and the great work of the charities involved”.
BBC audiences continue to give generously to appeals. The 2008 Children in Need appeal has already received a record-breaking £20,991,216.
The deadline for charities applying for the next round of Radio 4 and Lifeline Appeals is 12 January 2009.
