University of Kent at forefront of Centre for Charitable Giving

The University of Kent is to play a pivotal role in the new Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy.

The £2.2m initiative, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, Office of the Third Sector, the Carnegie UK Trust and the Scottish Executive will see the universities of Kent, Southampton, Edinburgh, Strathclyde and City University work together. It will aim to help third sector organisations, government and business to better understand why and how individuals and businesses can give, with a view to increasing giving in the UK.

The University of Kent’s main role will be in charitable giving and social redistribution, one of three ‘spokes’ in the Centre – the others being individual and business giving, and institutionalised giving structures.

The research programme will look at whether charitable activity mitigates or reinforces social and economic inequalities, the relationship between fundraising and the distribution of resources, and the connections between donors and beneficiaries. It will also be examining donor motivations.
