The charity sector in Scotland accounts for almost £10bn a year although two-thirds of charities there have an income of less than £25,000.

The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) has published figures on the sector gathered from the Scottish Charity Register giving a financial overview of the sector.

OSCR will be producing an updated document, Scottish Charities 2007 following its interim study in 2005 based on annual return and monitoring return forms submittted before the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 came into force.

Key points gathered so far include
*There are 23,784 charities on the Scottish Charity Register
*There are 2,792 churches and HE colleges
*19 charities are responsible for 36.6 per cent of the sector’s total income
*Two-thirds of charities in Scotland have an annual income under £25,000 and account for less than one per cent of the sector’s total income.

OSCR’s chief executive Jane Ryder said the figures were informative and demonstrated the Regulator’s proportionate approach. We are committed to the principles of best regulatory practice, she said. We are correct in requiring charities with smaller incomes to provide straightforward information. We provide ./guidance focused on the needs of smaller charities and they provide us with simplified accounts.

That is both proportionate and right, given that a relatively few larger charities account for such a percentage of the sector’s total income.
