Milwaukee philanthropist Chris Abele is to give $5 million to the Royal Shakespeare Company, according to The Business Journal in Milwaukee. It will be the theatre company’s “largest single donation from an American in its history”.

Abele, who is president of the Royal Shakespeare Company America Inc, which raises funds in the USA for the Stratford-upon-Avon-based theatre company.

The donation comes in response to the company’s £112.8 million capital appeal for a redeveloped theatre. The international campaign has already secured £100 towards the new 1000-seat thrust stage auditorium, which will make it “the largest thrust stage with a tiered auditorium in the world”.
