New Atlantic CEO gives interview

Gara LaMarche, the new president and CEO of Atlantic Philanthropies, has given his first interview since taking office. In the interview he describes the challenges he faces as Atlantic prepares to spend down its ‚€4 billion endowment over the next ten years and hints that Northern Ireland may be in line for more funding.

Mr LaMarche said he would be ‘questioning’ whether they could do more in Northern Ireland. With a new government that’s off to a good but fragile start, could Atlantic be doing above and beyond what we’re doing now? LaMarche said Atlantic loomed large in Ireland and they were working hard to build additional philanthropy.

Atlantic is unlikely to make significant adjustments in the kind of things it’s doing now or the locations but will try to have more of a global impact, according to LaMarche. The new CEO’s background in human rights means that Atlantic is keen to view issues ‘through more of a human rights lens.’

Following a number of years as an anonymous foundation, the scale and impact of Atlantic’s work will be communicated more widely under LaMarche’s leadership.
The board has hired somebody used to speaking out. One mechanism we’ve just launched is a bi-weekly website column, he said.
