Income at third world charity Concern Worldwide rose by 32 per cent to ‚€98.8 million last year, with ‚€81.8 million raised in Ireland, writes Susan Mitchell. The income figure was up ‚€24.1 million on 2002, setting a new record for the charity.
It included donations in kind, such as foodstuffs and clothing, government and international agency grants and public donations.
Concern said the increase in donations stemmed mainly from its commitment to handle food relief and distribution activities on behalf of the World Food Programme and other international agencies.

There was also a significant increase in monetary income from public donors in Ireland and Britain. Concern has actively recruited regular donors over the past two years, and public donations reached more than ‚€42 million last year.
“Our experience and our figures would indicate that people have become more giving,” said Concern’s deputy chief executive Paddy McGuinness.
“Over the past six weeks, for example, we have received about ‚€1.2 million for the Darfur [western Sudan] emergency appeal, which has not had a particularly high profile.”
Expenditure on fundraising and promotion came to ‚€12.13 million last year, a 7 per cent reduction from the 2002 level.
